3D Molecular Imaging on the PhotonIMAGER™


Locate optical signals precisely 

Optical imaging in small animals is an extremely powerful tool for studying disease processes and makes possible the longtitudinal study of tumor growth, cellular migration, or the course of infection in experimental animals over extended periods of time. One potential source of experimental variation found in the established two dimensional molecular imaging approaches is that the apparent size and/or distribution of labeled cells will be dependent in part on their position within the animal. However, anatomical features can be very mobile structures and in addition to any actual variation in signal intensity, any changes in apparent intensity from one imaging session to the next could also be due to a change in position.

Once installed in the Photon IMAGER™, the 3D pack solves this problem by providing for a truly 3-dimensional analysis of signal output.


3D Reconstruction Steps

The 3D Pack consists of the add-on 4-View hardware module, a picoprojector and add-in software module for M3 Vision, which incorporates algorithms for both 3D reconstruction and 3D analysis.


First step: 4-View acquisition

The 4 View module works by simultaneously capturing multi-angle images of optical signal; comprising dorsal, ventral and both lateral views of an entire animal.









Second step: surface profile

The PicoProjector, another hardware component of the 3D module acquire the surface profile. The surface reconstruction option is now available without the 3D module, now it is integrated in all our PhotonIMAGER™ Optima systems.










Final step: surface reconstruction

The M3 Vision software reconstructs accurate 3-dimensional data from the four separate orthogonal 2-dimensional views; allowing any change in apparent signal intensity between different imaging sessions to be more accurately assessed.

4D Imaging


With the 3D Pack installed, the PhotonIMAGER™retains its real-time imaging capability; making dynamic 3-dimensional optical signal measurement over time (4D Imaging) a reality.

- Simultaneously image four orthogonal views and record signal from almost the entire surface of the animal.
- Improve the resolution, localization and quantification of signal.
- Determine the volume distribution of signal intensity.
- Retains the real-time signal acquisition capability of the PhotonIMAGER™ for 4D Imaging applications.
